Exercise Can Alleviate Lower Back Pain

A lot of people suffer from lower back pain. One of the main reasons is the fact that many people are overweight and are putting pressure on their lower abdominal area. Over the counter pain medicines work temporarily, but they only mask the problem. Heat pads and heat/cold topical gels also mask the problem. A guaranteed way to permanently diminish lower back pain is through exercise.

Some common exercises to use for when you have chronic back pain is to simply walk. Walking, over time, will cause you to lose weight and loosen your muscles.  Other great exercises for the lower back are abdominal crunches, hyperextentions and stiff-legged deadlifts.  Abdominal chrunches will strengthen your core muscles and therefore relieve pressure on your back.

Hyperextensions, which are essentially crunches in the opposite direction, are good for the spine, if done slowly and after a thorough warm-up. Stiff-legged deadlifts strengthen the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower lumbar region. Stretching exercises will really help in relieving back pain if they are performed on a consistent basis. Remember to go slow when doing  your stretches and if you feel any twinges or discomfort to ease up on the stretch. A proper exercise program for the lower back might hurt in the beginning, but doing a little every day and building up gradually will lessen the pain and make you more flexible.

It’s important to not overwork your body and especially your back. Do not engage in any lower back exercises in the beginning. You need to first build up your core muscles, lose weight and become familiar with resistance training. Add weights to your routine and work your upper and lower body on opposite days. You will soon notice that when you are stronger, your back will hurt much much less. Your core muscles will compensate for your back when lifting and carrying. Stick to this routine and you are on your way to a pain free back.

Mesothelioma Patients Can Visit Chiropractors for Pain Management

Most people wouldnít think of chiropractic care as a useful tool in treatment of a cancer like mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is caused primarily by asbestos exposure and develops in the mesothelial cells that make up the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. Typically, the symptoms of mesothelioma can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years to begin showing. Because of this, by the time the cancer is diagnosed treatment options are usually limited.

Many cancer patients have chosen to visit a chiropractor as part of their treatment routine. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic doctors ìhave a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.î

Cancer patients that have included chiropractic care in their course of treatment have found that it can help control pain and alleviate headaches, tension and stress. Relieving severe headaches and movement pains during cancer treatment may make the treatment process more comfortable for cancer patients, including those battling mesothelioma.

A study was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that examined a 54-year-old man diagnosed with lung cancer (a cancer often related to asbestos exposure). The man began seeing a chiropractor after experiencing very little pain relief one year after he underwent surgery to combat his cancer. The man experienced pain relief immediately after beginning chiropractic care and stopped using all of his pain medications after two visits to his chiropractor. The Journal noted, ìThese clinical examples offer two specific instances of how chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patientís life.î
